Stock Market Open and Close Time

| July 26, 2024

Introduction

Imagine missing out on a great investment opportunity simply because you were unaware of the market’s operating hours. The timing of the stock market can be the difference between a profitable trade and a missed chance. In India, the stock market operates under specific hours that every investor should know about. This article will explain the stock market opening and closing time in simple terms, making it easy for anyone, even those new to investing, to understand. Let's dive into the details.

Timing Segments in the Indian Stock Market

The Indian stock market is divided into three main segments: the pre-opening session, the normal trading session, and the post-closing session. Each of these segments has a specific purpose and operates at different times.

Pre-opening Session

The pre-opening session is the first phase of the stock market day. It starts at 9:00 am and ends at 9:15 am, and it is like a warm-up for the market.

  1. Order Entry Period (9:00 am to 9:08 am): During this time, you can place orders to buy or sell shares. During this time, requests can be changed or cancelled as needed, benefiting investors. No orders can be placed after this 8-minute pre-opening session.
  2. Order Matching Period (9:08 am to 9:12 am): Here, the system matches buy and sell orders to determine the opening prices of stocks. Determination of final prices during normal Indian stock market hours is established using a multi-lateral order matching system.
  3. Buffer Period (9:12 am to 9:15 am): This short period transitions to the normal trading session, ensuring everything is in order before the market fully opens. Also, existing bets already placed from 9:08 am-9:12 am cannot be revoked as well.

Normal Trading Session

Most trading activities occur during the normal trading session, which runs from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Transactions made during this time follow a bilateral order matching system, in which price is determined through demand and supply forces.

  1. Continuous Trading (9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.): During these hours, you can buy and sell shares continuously. Prices change based on supply and demand, like how prices in a market can go up or down depending on how many people want to buy or sell something. The bilateral order matching system is volatile and leads to market fluctuations, which are reflected in security prices. The multi-order system was created for the pre-opening session to control this volatility and incorporated into Indian stock market timings.

Post-closing Session

The post-closing session happens after the normal trading session ends. It runs from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

  1. Closing Price Calculation (3:30 pm to 3:40 pm): The closing price of each stock is calculated based on the average price of trades in the last half hour of the normal session.
  2. Post-market Order Matching (3:40 pm to 4:00 pm): You can place orders based on the closing price, but these will only be executed at the next market opening. Bids placed during this time are confirmed, provided adequate buyers and sellers are present in the market for the following day's trade.

Breakdown of 2 Different Closing Times

3:30 pm – 3:40 pm

The closing price is determined using a weighted average of prices for securities traded between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm on the stock exchange. For benchmark and sector indices such as Nifty, Sensex, and S&P Auto, the weighted average prices of listed securities are used to calculate the closing prices.

3:40 pm – 4:00 pm

This is the post-market closing period during which bids for the next day's trades can be placed. Bids made during this time are confirmed as long as enough buyers and sellers are in the market. These transactions are executed at a set price, regardless of any changes in the opening market price.

Muhurat Trading

Muhurat trading is a special session held during Diwali, the festival of lights. It is considered auspicious and symbolises wealth and prosperity. The stock exchanges announce the exact timing for this session, which usually lasts about an hour in the evening. Trading during this session is believed to bring good luck and prosperity for the year ahead.

Please note: Muhurat trading will occur on Friday, November 1, 2024. It typically lasts an hour in the evening, usually from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm.
